During the project development and basic engineering design phases for a refinery project that GSAe
were supporting, the crude and refined product markets altered significantly from that encountered when the economic case for the project was developed.
In overall support of the concept for a new refinery in the northern Arabian Gulf, GSAe took part in the Basic Engineering for ’non-licensed’ units. Because of our specialism in recovering catalysts from hydrocarbons for recycle we also developed a system to improve the environmental credentials for a novel slurry catalyst technology called Heavy Residue Hydroconversion unit (HRH). This technology upgrades the crude feed oil with what would be a sacrificial catalyst without GSAe’s expertise.
Project development carried out at the GSAe processing facility to prove process to recover vanadium, molybdenum and nickel from different refinery residues. The development work was to support funding activities by providing process information and a reference operation.
The intention is to build a new extra heavy crude refinery in the Northern Gulf. The refinery will employ a
novel slurry catalyst technology called Heavy Residue Hydroconversion unit (HRH) to upgrade the crude
feed oil, thereby increasing yield. The technology is particularly efficient for processing crudes from
marginal oil fields
Development from visualisation through to completion of Basic Engineering Package of a unique
processing system to treat residue from the HDHPlus® unit being installed as part of their CP
RPLC Deep Conversion Project. HDHPLUS® is a flagship technology for Venezuela having
been developed in-country and is one of the emerging technologies for sustained bottom of the
barrel oil processing.
This project was to determine how to upgrade 3 obsolete installations in the Persian Gulf.
GSAe carried out the work in partnership with a local engineering group who complemented
GSAe’s process engineering capabilities with C&I, Electrical and Mechanical support. Overall,
the project included almost 70,000 man-hours of design work for the partnership.
